Something is brewing, and it is not a hot pot of cocoa tea! This could be the carnival season's dilemma, but "Miss How She Name" should find a solution to avoid chaos. Today, while browsing Facebook, I stumbled upon a post by Trinidad Madman, asserting that Kes's Cocoa Tea might have a copyright issue with Mysta Lyon's 2023 song, "Coco."
 
Whenever a song comes after another with anything that smells similar, the conversations begin, usually to the detriment of the latter song. Comparisons often trap listeners, sparking intense discussions about originality and influence. In this case, both artists have their own unique styles, but the buzz around potential similarities could overshadow the creativity behind their work.
 
Carnival is bacchanal, and Trinidadians love a healthy dose of bacchanalia. This is not the US, where any similarity in a musical piece is subject to legal action. I listened to Mysta Lyon's song, and indeed, it feels similar. This situation has the potential to escalate quickly and spark unnecessary controversy. Many people are already advocating for a road march to honor Kes's "Cocoa Tea."
 
It's an intriguing observation that you find similarities between Kes' "Cocoa Tea" and Mysta Lyon's "Cocoa." Both artists are known for incorporating vibrant Soca rhythms and island vibes into their music, which often creates a similar feel and energy.
 
Kes' "Cocoa Tea," released in 2024 for Carnival 2025, carries that signature Caribbean warmth, blending tropical beats with modern Soca elements. On the other hand, Mysta Lyon's "Cocoa" from 2023 also stands out with its lively soca grooves and engaging rhythms. Having said all of that, there is a familiarity in both songs. Hmm... and now it begins!
 
While it’s not uncommon for songs within the same genre to share certain musical elements, it’s indeed possible that the resemblances you hear are derived from the genre's defining characteristics. In other words, they may sound similar, but do they truly meet the Trini standard of "he thief it?" Both artists aim to evoke the joyous and infectious energy of Soca, which might explain the perceived similarities. Then again, the music sounds similar, and there are the shared Coco and Cocoa elements with the Cacao pod in play. This isn't looking good for "Cocoa Tea."
 
Although copyright disputes in the music industry are not new, it is crucial to handle these issues with care. We should fairly celebrate the unique sounds that Kes and Mysta Lyon bring to the carnival scene. As we await more details, we hope for a swift and amicable resolution. Above all, we should prioritize fairness. Continue to monitor this space!

The International Soca Monarch has vanished, but there's a new contender! Is this merely a rebranding of the International Soca Monarch, or is it something entirely new? Without further ado, we have taken some notes and presented the entire Ultimate Soca Monarch Press Conference with host Jerome "Rome" Precilla, which is being streamed live via CNC3. Please fast forward to fifteen minutes to get to the interview.

 

Now get ready to experience the ultimate celebration of Caribbean talent with the brand-new Ultimate Soca Champion event! Set to replace the beloved International Soca Monarch, this exciting competition promises to elevate the Soca music scene to unprecedented heights. The winner will receive a $1 million prize and also get the opportunity to perform in a "prestigious" international event.

 

Something Different, International Format: 

The Ultimate Soca Champion will feature top Soca artists from across the Caribbean, showcasing their incredible talent on a global stage. Gone are the Power and Groovy Competitions. Both categories will compete against each other to become the Ultimate Soca Monarch. However, there will be special prizes given to the best Power and Groovy Soca songs, as well as to  the People's Choice.

 

Media Partnerships: 

With the goal of reaching a wider audience, the event aims to secure partnerships with major media platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and more.

 

TV-Oriented: 

The competition will be heavily TV-oriented, similar to the popular reality TV series Carnival Catwalk, ensuring that Soca music lovers everywhere can enjoy the performances.

Machel Montano, the King of Soca, has unleashed his latest track, "Pardy," igniting the Soca scene with excitement. Written by Andre Jeffers (Perception Management) and Machel Montano himself and produced by XplicitMevon, Badjohn Republic, and Precision Productions, this song is a powerhouse of Soca energy.

 
He is Machel Montano, and any new music from him will create a buzz. However, is this song solely focused on creating hype? Is this song truly a contender, or is it simply packaged with a video to generate buzz? Is this song truly a contender for the Road March? Whether the producers and MM made the right decision remains to be seen. We don't think it will impact the Road March competition!
 
"Pardy" features background vocals by Karyce Phillips, Kendel Hayes, and Terri Lyons, adding depth and richness to the track. The song is a perfect blend of infectious rhythms and electrifying beats, catering to all those who love Power Soca music.

In a world where conformity often trumps individuality, it's essential to embrace one's voice, regardless of the criticism that may follow. I take pride in expressing my thoughts here. So here goes...
 

"Trust in It," a vibrant masterpiece by the talented Lyrical, is my favorite calypso for Carnival 2025 in Trinidad. But wait, I am not only saying best calypso but best song released for Carnival 2025! Kitwana Israel, Jason Gilbert, and Devon Martin skillfully wrote this captivating tune, and  Skorch Bun It, along with AdvoKit Productions, brought it to life. The song's infectious rhythm and uplifting lyrics resonate with the spirit of celebration that defines Carnival. As the festivities approach, I can't help but anticipate the electrifying performances that will showcase this anthem of joy and unity.

 
The song's enchanting guitar strums form the heart of its musical arrangement, underscoring Lyrical's profound affection for Soca music. Remarkably, Lyrical masterfully blends the rhythm and soul of Calypso to pay homage to Soca, creating a unique and harmonious fusion. The essence of this composition is relaxation and music enjoyment. It is a song to chip on the road with friends, and, most significantly, it embodies a positive and uplifting sentiment.
