Port-of-Spain's Victoria Square pulsated with the vibrant heartbeat of the steelpan last night as the National Small Conventional Steelpan Bands semi-finals brought thirty bands to the stage. From dusk till past midnight, the air hummed with anticipation, punctuated by the sweet, rhythmic symphony of the pan.

Though Motown Steel Orchestra, slotted at number six, opted out at the eleventh hour, twenty-nine bands battled it out, each vying for a coveted spot in the Panorama finals. The judges, tasked with the monumental responsibility of deciphering this tapestry of musical brilliance, deliberated until well after the clock struck twelve. Finally, at 1:15 am, the silence broke with the announcement of the fifteen finalists, sending waves of delight and, inevitably, whispers of disappointment throughout the square.

New East Side Dimension emerged victorious with their rendition of "Toco Band," arranged by Kersh Ramsey, earning them a resounding 277 points and the top spot. The crowd erupted in cheers, celebrating the band's mastery and the sheer joy of music that had transcended the late-night setting.

But as is the nature of any competition, discontentment murmured alongside the applause. Supporters of bands that narrowly missed the cut expressed their disappointment, a reminder of the immense pressure and sacrifice poured into each performance.

Yet, through it all, the undeniable magic of the pan reigned supreme. Every band, regardless of the score, poured their hearts onto the stage, weaving tales of cultural heritage and national pride through the resonant voices of their pans. They painted sonic landscapes, each note pulsating with the spirit of Trinidad and Tobago, leaving the audience breathless and yearning for more.

One thing is certain: the semi-final competition may be over, but the echoes of last night's performances will linger long after the final note fades. Victoria Square witnessed a celebration of the steelpan, a testament to the unwavering passion and dedication of steel band musicians who, year after year, breathe life into our national instrument.

Now, we turn our eyes to the finals, where fifteen bands will take to the stage, each vying for the ultimate prize. But regardless of who takes home the coveted title, one thing is clear: the journey to the finals has already been a victory for the pan, for music, and for the soul of Trinidad and Tobago.

So, let the pan reign supreme! On to the finals on January 12th. 2024 and let the sweet steel symphony continue!

The air crackled with anticipation as the National Small Steelbands Semi-finals blessed the island with sweet Steelpan music. In the heart of Port of Spain, Victoria Square pulsed with the vibrant rhythm of steel, ready to witness the National Small Steelbands Semifinal for the Panorama Competition. Thirty steel orchestras, representing the pulsating soul of Trinbagonian culture, prepared to unleash their musical firestorms.

Each band, a microcosm of passion and dedication, entered the arena like warriors adorned in the vibrant tapestry of their communities. Young faces gleamed with nervous excitement, seasoned veterans radiating the stoic focus of champions. The iconic pans, glinting under the stage lights, promised stories yet to be told – tales of resilience, joy, and the unyielding spirit of Trinidad and Tobago.

The competition roared to life. The first band, their energy raw and untamed, unleashed a torrent of sound. The pan yard transformed into a battlefield, every ping and boom a deliberate strike, forging a sonic narrative that pulsed through the audience. Each subsequent band brought their unique flavor – the lilting melodies of the East Coast, the fiery rhythms of the North, the pulsating bass lines of the South.

Judges, faces etched with concentration, meticulously assessed each performance. Every note, every nuance, every innovative arrangement weighed against the standards of excellence. But the true judge was the crowd. A sea of vibrant enthusiasm swayed and pulsed, responding to the music with an almost primal passion. Hands clapped, feet stomped, and voices rose in exuberant choruses, transforming the square into a living, breathing organism pulsating with the rhythm of the pan.

If you are looking for a song that will make you want to dance, sing, and celebrate the spirit of Carnival, look no further than “Gimme Everything” by Len Boogsie Sharpe feat. Kes and Keshav. This song is a new calypso anthem for the Panorama Steel Band competition, which showcases the best steel bands in Trinidad and Tobago. This is the song to watch, this is "Gimme Everything" A New Calypso Anthem for Panorama.

Boogsie, as he is fondly known, is a steel pan maestro who has won seven Panorama Titles with Phase II Pan Groove He (Boogsie) composed, arranged, and performed the music for this song. He is the proud recipient of an honorary doctorate from the University of the West Indies for his steelpan prowess and contributions to the art form. In this song, he collaborates with Kes, the lead singer of the band Kes The Band, and Keshav, a young and talented percussionist, producer, singer, and songwriter. He (Keshav) is also half of the "Jus Now" (@jusnowmusic) production team.

The lyrics for this song were written and performed by Kees Difenthaller of Kes The Band. He is a versatile and charismatic vocalist, who has won several awards and accolades for his music. Kes, if you did not know,  is the 'girls dem darling'. He is also a passionate advocate for the culture and heritage of Trinidad and Tobago.

The song is a catchy and upbeat tune that celebrates the joy and excitement of playing and listening to steelpan music. Look, this song has a vibe and should be a favorite for Carnival 2024. The lyrics are a call to action for the steel bands and the audience to give their all and enjoy the moment. The chorus goes:

Gimme everyday gimme everyday
Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme everything
Gimme everyday
Gimme everyday
Darling gimme everything

The song also pays tribute to all the women who support steel bands "feeling the magic of the pan" every carnival season. "Gimme Everything" is a perfect fit for the Panorama Steel Band competition but watch for it to be played by one band, Hadco Phase II Pan Groove. The Panorama competition is an integral part of Carnival and this is going to be an interesting year. Wouldn't you love to see Boogsie and Kes get their just dues?

The song is available on all major streaming platforms for downloading and streaming. If you are a Calypso, Soca, or Steelpan music fan, you will definitely enjoy this song and appreciate the talent and passion of the artists involved. If you are unfamiliar with these genres, this song will introduce you to a rich and vibrant musical tradition unique to Trinidad and Tobago. Either way, you cannot resist the urge to dance, sing, and give everything for Pan.

YouTube Music Notes:
Gimme Everything is an ode to Pan in the ‘Big Yard’, which comes together by an unexpected collaboration between Pan Virtuoso & Maestro, Dr. Len ‘Boogsie’ Sharpe, Soca Superstar ‘Kes’ & Superproducer ‘Keshav’. This record aims to bring Pan back into the Party, on the Road & in the Fete with a collision of timeless Steelpan melodies & 21st century Soca. Kes’ vocal refrains are set to ring out magnificently, with World-renowned Hadco Phase II Pan Groove playing ‘Gimme Everything’ as their song of choice for Panorama 2024.
