I recently stumbled upon a vibrant Chutney mixtape on a YouTube channel called Pandit Cocky, which seems to be based in the Netherlands. Despite the limited details about the channel, the music captivated me, and I believe it could resonate with the broader East Indian diaspora.
I am confident that, like Sokah2Soca, your curiosity is about who’s behind the sound. We know this; the group is called Oemar & Squadz.
Our Google search turned up the following information about this group:
- They are a live music and entertainment outfit based in the Netherlands
- Apparently, the group is well known for performing at weddings, parties, and community events
- They are well connected musically with Hindustani music as well as Caribbean Chutney music
- It looks like they frequently do collaborations with other artists and may soon become a known entity within the Caribbean East Indian community.
We bleed Soca, but there is also Chutney Soca and a thriving East Indian-style music industry that is exploding across Trinidad, Guyana, Surinam and Toronto, Canada.
